「海外からのお客様と、滋賀の自然・文化を楽しむ」

ナマステ！

この夏、outdoor station まほろばでは、海外からお越しのお客様をご案内する機会がありました。

近江八幡の古い街並みを巡ったり、びわ湖沿岸を自転車で走ったり、里山を歩いたり。

さらに、鈴鹿10座への登山、夜の山を歩くナイトハイク、御在所岳でのクライミング、夏ならではの沢登り、そして地域で開催されるイベントへの参加など、さまざまな「滋賀の自然と暮らし」を一緒に楽しんでいただきました。

海外からのお客様をご案内することについては、正直なところ、最初は不安もありました。

言葉はちゃんと通じるだろうか。

文化や習慣の違いに対応できるだろうか。安全に楽しんでもらえるだろうか。

そんなことを考えていましたが、実際にやってみると、意外と何とかなるものです。もちろん、英語力はまだまだ勉強中です。それでも、身振り手振りを交えながら説明したり、一緒に歩き、一緒に笑ったりしているうちに、言葉だけではないコミュニケーションが生まれていきました。

そして、海外からのお客様をご案内することで、私自身が改めて地域の魅力に気づかせてもらうこともたくさんありました。

昔から残る町並みや神社。

地域の人たちとの交流。

私にとっては身近なものでも、海外から来られた方にとっては、とても新鮮で特別な体験になることがあります。

一方で、海外からのお客様だからこそ、事前に準備しておくべきことや、伝え方、安全管理、文化や習慣の違いへの配慮など、今回の経験を通して学ばせていただいたこともたくさんありました。

「完璧に準備ができてから始める」のではなく、まずやってみる。

そこから見えてくる課題を一つずつ改善していくことも大切なのだと感じています。

outdoor station まほろばでは、これからも海外から滋賀を訪れる皆さんに、ただ有名な観光地を見るだけではなく、この地域の自然の中で遊び、歩き、地域の人や文化に触れる時間を楽しんでいただけるような体験をつくっていきたいと思います。

山も、びわ湖も、里山も、町も、人も。

私たちが大切にしているこの地域の魅力を、国や言葉を越えて伝えていけたら嬉しいです。

Sharing the Nature and Culture of Shiga with Guests from Around the World

This summer, outdoor station MAHOROBA had many opportunities to welcome and guide guests from overseas.

Together, we explored the historic streets of Omihachiman, cycled along the shores of Lake Biwa, and hiked through the beautiful satoyama countryside.

We also enjoyed many outdoor adventures, including hiking in the Suzuka Mountains, night hiking, climbing at Mt. Gozaisho, stream climbing, and even joining local community events.

At first, I was a little nervous about guiding international guests.

Would we be able to communicate well?

Would differences in language and culture cause difficulties?

Could I make sure everyone felt comfortable and safe?

But once we actually started, I realized something very simple:

Sometimes, you just have to give it a try.

My English is still a work in progress, but communication is about much more than words. Walking together, sharing experiences, using gestures when necessary, and simply enjoying the moment together can create a connection beyond language.

Guiding international guests has also given us a new appreciation for our own region.

The satoyama landscapes we see every day, the views of Lake Biwa, old streets and shrines, and encounters with local people may feel familiar to us, but for visitors from another country, they can become very special experiences.

At the same time, this summer has taught us a lot.

We learned more about what we need to prepare in advance for international guests, how to communicate important information clearly, how to manage safety, and how to be mindful of cultural differences.

We are still learning, and there is plenty of room to improve.

But rather than waiting until everything is perfect, we believe it is important to take the first step, learn from each experience, and keep getting better.

At outdoor station MAHOROBA, we hope to continue welcoming guests from around the world.

We want visitors to experience more than famous sightseeing spots. We want them to walk through our mountains, cycle beside Lake Biwa, explore our countryside, meet local people, and experience the nature and culture of Shiga for themselves.

The mountains, Lake Biwa, our satoyama landscapes, our towns, and our people.

We hope to share the things we love about this region with people from all over the world — beyond borders and beyond language.
